Wins for Wildey and Spartan as rain thwarts Carlton in Round 8 of Elite division

Bridgetown, Barbados, December 4 – ( – There were two wins on the third and final day of the eighth and penultimate series in the BCA Elite division Championship today.

Wildey crushed struggling Sagicor Life UWI by ten wickets at SJPIT and fellow title chasers Fusionz Boutique Spartan, the defending champions, came from behind to pull off a nail-biting one-wicket victory against Wanderers at Dayrells Road.

Rain severely dented Carlton’s hopes of beating fellow relegation-worried St. Catherine as only 13.2 overs were possible at Bayfield following a prompt start.

At SJPIT: Spinners Deswin Currency and Tariq O’Neale shared seven wickets to undermine the UWI batting.

Facing a first innings deficit of 74, UWI were bowled out for 142 from an overnight 32 for one.

Hans Campbell top-scored with 44.

Left-arm spinner Currency took four for 16 off 13 overs and off-spinner O’Neale, three for 62 off 11 overs to end with match figures of 11 for 115.

Wildey raced to their target of 69 in 9.3 overs with left-hander scoring 39 off 35 balls including two fours and three sixes, while Craig St. Hill was unbeaten on 22.

At Dayrells Road: Three half-centuries helped Spartan in as fortunes fluctuated.

Chasing 259 for victory and resuming on 25 for one, Spartan slipped from 221 for four to 254 for nine before nervously reaching their target.

Marrodon Bend scored 61 off 88 balls with five fours and three sixes, Nicholas Carter made 52 off 86 deliveries including seven boundaries and Tauron Gibson hit 51 off 52 balls with seven fours.

Jason Goring took three for 24 off 9.1 overs and leg-spinner Kymani Richardson, three for 32 off 12 overs.

At Bayfield: Carlton were left cursing their luck after dominating play on the first two days.

Following-on with a first innings deficit of 229 and starting the day on 87 for four off 19 overs, St. Catherine reached 136 for four off 32.3 overs before rain swept across the ground after 44 minutes.

It dumped enough water for play to be called off at 1:25 p.m.

Skipper Mikhail Austin was unbeaten on 45 from an overnight 16 and Kenroy Williams made 34 not out after resuming on 17.

Left-arm spinner Matthew Jones took two for 40 off 16 overs and medium-pacer Zidane Clarke, two for 76 off 11 overs.

At Beckles Road: Kemal Smith completed a fine, unbeaten century as Bayview Hospital YMPC took first innings lead over Empire but still ended with fewer points in the high-scoring match.

From an overnight 284 for six off 50 overs, YMPC were bowled out for 382 in 72.5 overs – the highest total of the season – in reply to 316 for four declared off 53 overs.

Smith, who started the day on 82, scored 134 not out off 193 balls with 20 threes and five fours.

Pacer Jaden Edmund took five for 78, spinner Kevin Wickham, two for 25 and fast bowler Jarion Hoyte, two for 66.

Empire scored 145 for eight in the second innings.

At Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden: After wet conditions had prevented a ball from being bowled on the second day, BWU Gladiola got first innings lead over SigniaGlobe Financial Barbados Youth.

Resuming on 39 for four, Gladiola were dismissed for 181 – a lead of 21.

Richard Sampson and Korie Miller each scored 37 and Jaden Hoyte 33.
