Brutal Mayers slams unbeaten ton as Barbados crush Windwards by 8 wickets (DLS method) – CWI CG United Super50 Cup

Tarouba, Trinidad, October 25 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Opening batsman Kyle Mayers slammed a brutal, unbeaten century as Barbados Pride crushed Windward Islands Volcanoes by eight wickets (DLS method) with 37 balls remaining in their Cricket West Indies (CWI) CG United Super50 Cup match here today.

Set a revised target of 148 off 21 overs following a prolonged interruption for rain at the end of the Windward Islands Volcanoes innings of 241 for eight off 50 overs after they were sent in at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Barbados Pride triumphed  in 14.5 overs.

Left-hander Mayers, 31, scored 107 not out – his fourth List A hundred – off only 52 balls with nine fours and the same number of sixes. He reached his half-century off 30 balls, while his hundred took 48 deliveries.

“It’s just a matter of staying as still as possible. The wicket was a good one so just being balanced at the crease and choosing the right balls to hit – that’s my method throughout any cricket I play, so I just tried to stick to it as long as possible,” said Player Of The Match Mayers, a West Indies all-format all-rounder.

After West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite was caught by wicketkeeper Johnson Charles without scoring off his first ball and the fifth of the innings from fast bowler Ryan John, Mayers added 68 in only 6.2 overs with Shamarh Brooks, who made eight.

Then Mayers and skipper Shai Hope, who is also the West Indies One-Day International captain, put on 70 in 7.4 overs of breathless strokeplay.

Hope made 29 not out off 28 balls with two sixes and one four.

The bowler to suffer most was Mayers’ Carlton club-mate, medium-pace all-rounder Shamar Springer, who was plundered for 43 runs off 2.5 overs.

John also got some stick, taking one for 33 off three overs.

Windward Islands were given a solid start of 52 in 7.2 overs between West Indies left-hander Alick Athanaze and another international, Charles, before Athanaze was bowled by medium-pacer Mayers for 22.

Charles then added 49 in 9.1 overs with Trinidadian Jeremy Solozano before Charles was caught by wicketkeeper Hope off West Indies Test left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican for the top-score of 59 off 48 balls including seven fours and three sixes.

Captain Andre Fletcher soon succumbed to off-spinner Roston Chase for five before Solozano and the experienced Kavem Hodge put on 49 off 10.5 overs.

Solozano scored 40 off 68 balls with fours boundaries and Hodge made 34 off 38 deliveries.

The total was beefed up by an eighth-wicket stand of 46 off six overs between Springer (23 not out) and Larry Edward, who scored 32 off 23 balls with two fours and two sixes.

Warrican and his Empire club-mate Chase were outstanding with figures of two for 24 and two for 29 – each off 10 overs.

The Pride again made one change with seamer Akeem Jordan, who was sidelined with a niggle for the previous match against West Indies Academy, returning for all-rounder Roshon Primus.
