Wildey, Gladiola win in Elite division Championship, Series 1

Bridgetown, Barbados, August 28 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – There were wins for Wildey and BWU Gladiola in Series 1 of the BCA Elite division Championship on the third and final day.

Wildey beat SigniaGlobe Financial Barbados Youth by an innings and 87 runs at the Harrison College ‘A’ ground, Crumpton Street, while Gladiola came from behind to defeat defending champions Fusionz Boutique Spartan by one wicket at Rices.

Three centuries were scored.

Romario Brathwaite of Wanderers had the honour of hitting the first ton – 100 not out against St. Catherine at Bayfield.

St. Catherine all-rounder Ulric Batson made an unbeaten 107.

And Rashawn Worrell of Carlton scored 100 not out against Bayview Hospital YMPC at Desmond Haynes Oval.

At Harrison College ‘A’, Crumpton Street: Left-armer Jerome Jones, bowling both pace and spin, grabbed five for 18 off 13.3 overs as Wildey crushed Barbados Youth by an innings and 87 runs.

With a deficit of 151, Barbados Youth were bowled out for 64 in 35.3 overs.

Kyron King hit the topscore of 26.

Apart from Jones, left-arm spinner Steve Pinder took two for five and leg-spinner Zishan Motara, two for 21.

Earlier, Wildey, resuming on 215 for five, scored 223.

Demetrius Richards topscored with 56 after starting the day on 54.

Captain and medium-fast bowler Zion Brathwaite took four of the last five wickets to finish with six for 27 off 8.5 overs.

At Rices: Fortunes fluctuated before Gladiola beat Spartan by one wicket.

Chasing 99 for victory, Gladiola were under early pressure at 25 for three before all-rounder Giovonte Depeiza led a recovery in a partnership of 22 with Martin Nurse.

Nurse was then run out for 13 and they slipped to 63 for seven.

A stand of 20 between Depeiza, who topscored with 27 and Shakeel Turney (12) led to a revival but both fell in successive overs, leaving the score on 85 for nine before Miguel Cummins (10 not out) and Korie Miller added 16 as Miller (eight not out) brought up the victory by swinging left-arm spinner Andre Marshall over midwicket for four.

Off-spinner Chaim Holder took three for 22, left-arm pacer Davien Branker, two for 18 and Marshall, two for 34.

From an overnight 57 for seven, Spartan made 75 all out in the second innings.

Miller ended with four for 12, off-spinner Ashley Nurse, four for 25 and Depeiza, two for four.

At Bayfield: Romario Brathwaite and Ulric Batson enjoyed themselves with centuries.

Rookie Brathwaite, who celebrated his 25th birthday on August 19, scored 100 not out in a Wanderers second innings total of 261 for seven declared after starting the day on 82 for one.

Batting at No. 6, Brathwaite faced 81 balls and struck 11 fours and three sixes in 108 minutes.

Opener Ryshon Williams made 75 resuming on 41.

Requiring 268 to win, St. Catherine ended on 166 for four with Batson hitting an unbeaten 107 off 79 balls in 126 minutes including nine fours and four sixes.

At Desmond Haynes Oval: After a combination of incisive bowling from captain and left-arm spinner Matthew Jones and pacer Zidane Clarke spurred Carlton to a 45-run first innings lead, opener Rashawn Worrell scored a century in a draw against YMPC.

Jones took six for 46 off 14.5 overs and Clarke picked up three for 35 off 13 overs as YMPC were bowled out for 99 from an overnight five without loss.

Left-hander Worrell then made 100 not out off 112 balls in 167 minutes with eight fours and four sixes in a total of 184 for two.

Worrell and newcomer Yusuf Teladia (46) put on 126 for the second wicket.

At 3Ws Oval: An eighth-wicket partnership of 110 between Amari Goodridge and Chemar Holder helped Sagicor Life UWI to a draw against Empire.

Facing a first innings deficit of 140, UWI were struggling on 100 for seven before Goodridge and Holder pulled them around.

Goodridge scored 83 off 88 balls with six fours and three sixes while Holder was unbeaten on 48, hitting four sixes and one four.

Ian Perryman took four for 54 and left-arm left-arm spinner Camarie Boyce, three for 85.

From an overnight 157 for five, Empire made 185.

Shaquille Cumberbatch topscored with 45 and Dequan Alleyne scored 41.

Left-arm pacer Jediah Blades took three for 17, leg spinner Javed Leacock, three for 30 and off-spinner Romario Greaves, two for 54.
