Wildey beat Empire to maintain top position in Elite division

Bridgetown, Barbados, September 11 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Wildey remained at the top of the table after beating Empire by seven wickets at SJPIT in Series 2 of the BCA Elite division three-day Championship.

There were also outright wins in the other matches.

BWU Gladiola kept their second position with a 170-run win over Carlton at Rices, Wanderers crushed Bayview Hospital YMPC by an innings and 13 runs at Beckles Road, St. Catherine beat SigniaGlobe Financial Barbados Youth by 141 runs at Bayfield and defending champions Fusionz Boutique Spartan defeated Sagicor Life UWI by eight wickets at Queen’s Park.

Wildey, on 37 points, and Gladiola 34, are the only teams with two victories.

At SJPIT: Off-spinner Shane Jones grabbed a 10-wicket match haul to pave the way for Wildey’s win.

Jones took four for 50 off 15 overs as Empire, from an overnight four without loss, were bowled out for 166 in the second innings.

Opener Jai-Bari Yarde hit the topscore of 61 off 49 balls with five fours and four sixes.

Jones had match figures of 10 for 134 off 44 overs.

Set 133 for victory in 32 overs, Wildey triumphed in 17 overs.

They were put on course by an opening partnership of 71 in 10.1 overs between Shanaldo Taylor (37) and fellow left-hander Demetrius Richards (28).

Akeem Jordan then lashed an unbeaten 34 off 18 balls and Shane Parris was 17 not out in a stand of 47.

At Rices: Medium-pacer Akeem Bourne snatched five for 26 off seven overs and captain and left-arm spinner Giovonte Depeiza took three for 19, also off seven overs as Gladiola raced to victory before tea.

Needing 258 for victory from the start of play on the final day, Carlton’s weak batting was again exposed as they tumbled to 87 all out in 23 overs. The last nine wickets fell for 43 runs.

Kirk Gibson was again topscorer with 23 after making 29 in the first innings.

At Beckles Road: Medium-pacer Jacob Ince snatched five for 54 off 12.3 overs, including three for 40 on the final day, to spearhead Wanderers’ win.

With a deficit of 124 and resuming on 35 for four, YMPC were dismissed for 111 before tea.

Kemal Smith scored 30.

Left-arm spinner Ryshon Williams picked up two for 23.

At Bayfield: A combination of pace and spin led St. Catherine to a comfortable win.

Barbados Youth, needing 262 for victory in 59 overs, were dismissed for 122 in 40.1 overs.

Pacer Dashawn Thompson-Norville took three of the first four wickets to finish with three for 31, while Shayon Blenman picked up two for four and fellow spinner Javere Callender, two for 15.

Akeem McCollin (28) again topscored for Barbados Youth following his first innings 32.

From an overnight 58 with St. Catherine 127 for five opener Neil Browne completed his first century of the season and third of his top division career in a total of 206 for nine declared.

Browne made 100 not out off 112 balls in 167 minutes with six fours and four sixes.

Leg-spinner Dave Lovell took six for 68 off 15.1 overs.

At Queen’s Park: Captain Akeem Springer scored his second half-century of the match after experienced left-arm spinner Andre Marshall grabbed six wickets in a memorable win for Spartan.

Marshall took six for 53 off 26.3 overs and off-spinner Chaim Holder, three for 70 off 19 overs in a UWI second innings total of 187 after they started the day on 34 for one.

Skipper Chemar Holder scored 75 off 97 balls in 131 minutes including one four and six sixes. He put on 94 for the eighth wicket with Javed Leacock (20).

Chasing 128 to win in 27 overs, Spartan triumphed in 16.1 overs.

Springer scored 54 off 47 balls with four fours and two sixes to follow his first innings 87. He and Marrodon Bend, unbeaten on 40 off 25 balls including one four and three sixes, added 78 for the second wicket.
