Bajans Young, Wickham rescue West Indies Academy in no result against Barbados – CWI CG United Super50 Cup

St. Augustine, Trinidad, October 23 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – The Barbadian pair of captain Nyeem Young, who hit his first ever List A half-century and Kevin Wickham, rescued West Indies Academy before rain forced a no result against Barbados Pride in their Cricket West Indies (CWI) CG United Super50 Cup match here today.

Sent in, West Indies Academy were in dire straits on 31 for five by the 13th over before reaching 141 for six off 38.1 overs when rain swept across the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Ground and eventually ended play.

Fast bowling all-rounder Young was unbeaten on 67 off 89 balls with two fours and four sixes, while fellow former West Indies Under-19 team player Wickham made 43 off 61 deliveries including two boundaries. The pair added 93 in 22.2 overs for the sixth wicket.

West Indies Academy owed their early problems partly to rash strokes as left-armer Dominic Drakes grabbed the first two wickets in successive overs and fellow pacer Jair McAllister picked up the next two.

Kimani Melius (nine), driving, was caught at cover by Shamarh Brooks with the score 18 in the sixth over of the match.

Then left-hander Leonardo Julien, also driving without moving his feet, edged a regulation catch to wicketkeeper, captain Shai Hope, having failed to score off 12 balls.

Off the first ball of the next over – the first from McAllister, pitched short after he replaced medium-pacer Kyle Mayers – left-hander Matthew Nandu (eight) pulled into the hands of square-leg in Kraigg Brathwaite.

Teddy Bishop was also a victim of the pull, caught at short midwicket by an alert substitute, Kemar Smith, for two.

Medium-pace all-rounder Roshon Primus, drafted into the side for Akeem Jordan, who is nursing a niggle, soon hd Ackeem Auguste (three) slapping a full toss to cover for Roston Chase to take a simple catch.

As Wickham and Young were rebuilding the innings, Young survived a chance on 21 to slip in Mayers off leg-spinner Javed Leacock in his first over with the score on 70 for five.

Wickham, sweeping, was removed by his Empire clubmate, off-spinner Chase, to a catch at backward square-leg by McAllister.

Young, known for his big-hitting, soon opened his shoulders and swung left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican over midwicket for six as he moved to 59, and in the next over lifted Chase for a straight six.
