THRILLER: Barbados beat Windwards by 4 wickets, CWI Women’s T20, Round 4

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 25 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Barbados snatched a thrilling four-wicket win off the very last ball against Windward Islands in a critical fourth and penultimate round match of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s Twenty20 Blaze at Warner Park tonight.

Chasing 129 to win and needing six runs off the final over from left-arm spinner Qiana Joseph, Barbados lost two wickets to run outs before experienced left-hander Kyshona Knight got a single to spark celebrations.

The last over could not have been more dramatic.

Shamilia Connell fell off the second ball to make it 124 for five and three balls later Trishan Holder perished with two runs required.

Joseph then sent down a wide outside the off stump before the level-headed Kyshona Knight pulled a short ball to midwicket and scampered a run with Aaliyah Williams as her partner in scoring 19 not out off 14 balls.

Barbados were put on course by Kyshona’s twin sister Kycia and Naijanni Cumberbatch, who put on 66 in 11.1 overs for the second wicket following the dismissal of Aaliyah Alleyne, leg before wicket by Joseph for nine off ten balls with the score 25 off the last ball of the fourth over.

The removal of left-hander Kycia Knight, leg before wicket by Zaida James off the first ball of the 16th over as she played across for the top-score of 49 off the same number of balls including five boundaries, raised the hopes of Windward Islands, who were the pre-series leaders.

Cumberbatch was caught and bowled off the last ball of the over for 22 off 35 balls.

And after captain Shakera Selman was stumped off her West Indies Women’s team-mate, leg-spinner Afy Fletcher for eight to leave the score 119 for four in 18.2 overs, nerves seemingly hit both teams, underlined by the run outs of Connell and Holder.

James took two for 27 off four overs.

Earlier, Windward Islands made 128 for seven off 20 overs.

Left-hander Joseph top-scored with 50 off the same number of balls including six fours and one six at No. 5 before she was bowled by veteran seamer Selman.

Malika Edward helped to beef up the total with 20 off 14 deliveries including three boundaries.

Big West Indies Women fast bowler Connell snatched three for 16 and new ball partner Allison Gordon picked up two for 20 – both off four overs.

The win pushed Barbados to 12 points – the same as fellow Cup challengers Guyana who defeated defending champions Jamaica by eight wickets.

Windward Islands and Jamaica are on eight points, Trinidad & Tobago, four and Leeward Islands, nought.

On Saturday, Barbados will clash with rock-bottom Leeward Islands at Warner Park, Guyana oppose Trinidad & Tobago at St. Paul’s Sports Complex and Jamaica meet Windward Islands at Conaree Sports Club with all matches starting at 8 a.m.
