Shai Hope slams brisk half-century for Pickwick in BCA T20 Cup

Bridgetown, Barbados, April 29 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Shai Hope slammed one of the fastest half-centuries in the history of the BCA Elite/Division 1 Twenty20 Cup Championship as ESA Field Pickwick crushed IDL Walkers Sand Quarry Isolation Cavaliers by nine wickets in Series 5 today.

Playing in Zone ‘B’ at the scenic KMV Oval in Lakes, St. Andrew, Hope, the West Indies One-Day International captain, who recently returned home from England after a short stint with Yorkshire in the County Championship, made an unbeaten 70 off only 17 balls including six fours and seven sixes as Pickwick achieved a target of 114 in 7.3 overs.

Batting at No. 3 in his first local match of the season, Hope reached his fifty off 12 balls with four fours and six sixes following the dismissal of the in-form Yvan Grant for 24.

Grant’s aggregate is now 247 including a century and a 98, at an average of 82.33.

Shamar Forde scored 23 not out.

Isolation Cavaliers, one of three teams languishing at the bottom of the table on two points, made 113 for four off 20 overs after they were sent in.

Skipper Jamaine Bullen scored 47 not out off 40 balls with three fours and two sixes. He and Khalil Herbert (22 not out) featured in a partnership of 51 in 6.4 overs.

Off-spinner Raymond Bynoe, who plays in Canada, took two for 15 in his first match of the season.

It was the fourth win for Pickwick, lifting them to 18 points along with Wildey and Bayview Hospital YMPC in the race for places in the quarter-finals.

Wildey beat struggling Little Fabian Enterprises Maple by 55 runs at SJPIT and YMPC defeated Wanderers by 11 runs at Beckles Road.

Turning out for Wildey was former Barbados and West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite, who made 38 in a total of 175 for four off 20 overs.

Maple scored 120 for six.

Another former Barbados and West Indies all-rounder, Dwayne Smith, hit 71 off 58 balls in YMPC’s 164 for four off 20 overs. It was Smith’s third half-century of the Tournament, taking his aggregate to 214 (ave: 53.50).

Wanderers were restricted to 153 for four with opener Seth Agard scoring 62 not out off 53 balls.

In the same Zone, Sagicor Life UWI ‘B’ amassed the season’s highest total so far – 205 for four off 20 overs – against SigniaGlobe Financial BCA Youth ‘A’, who lost by 78 runs at 3Ws Oval.

Captain Tahj Tavernier led the way for UWI ‘B’ with an unbeaten 77 off 39 balls including eight fours and two sixes and Jamar Ifill made 52 off 29 balls with two fours and five sixes. It was Tavernier’s second half-century of the season.

Pacer Aaron Daley Jr, son of the former Jamaica fast bowler with the same name, then took five for 14 off four overs as BCA Youth ‘A’ were dismissed for 127 in 19.5 overs.

All-rounder Rashad Worrell made 55 off 51 balls with three fours and three sixes at the top of the order.

Inspired by a solid all-round performance from Dante Niles, Carlton defeated hapless Police by 26 runs at Weymouth.

Niles top-scored with 49 off 40 balls including five fours and one six at No. 9 in a total of 145 for eight. He put on 71 in 10.2 overs with Zidane Clarke (27 not out) for the eighth wicket.

Bowling off-spin, Niles then took three for 13 off two overs after coming on as the last of seven bowlers. He also effected a run out as Police fell for 119 in 19.2 overs.

Promising 19-year-old pacer Che Simmons, who has been signed by English County Club Warwickshire, took two for 14 off 3.2 overs in his first local match of the season.

In Zone ‘A’, BWU Gladiola and defending champions Sagicor Life UWI ‘A’ maintained their 100 percent winning record. They will clash in Round 6 at Rices on Sunday.

Gladiola defeated St. Catherine by 14 runs at Rices and UWI ‘A’ brushed aside SigniaGlobe Financial BCA Youth ‘B’ by nine wickets at the Harrison College ‘A’ ground, Crumpton Street.

There were also wins for IGS Insurance Brokers Yorkshire, Fusionz Boutique Spartan and Windward over Foundation, Lords and Empire.
