Reifer (6-23 & 55 n.o), Brathwaite (137 n.o) put Barbados in strong position against Jamaica

Bridgetown, Barbados, February 16 – ( – A career-best six-wicket haul by all-rounder Raymon Reifer, who also starred with the bat and captain Kraigg Brathwaite’s 25th first-class century put Barbados in a strong position against Jamaica Scorpions on the second day of the second round regional match at Kensington Oval.

Reifer, an exuberant left-arm medium-pacer, grabbed six for 23 including six for eight off 7.1 overs as Jamaica collapsed sensationally from an overnight 299 for three to 328 all out in 95.4 overs.

The 30-year-old Reifer then returned to join his Wanderers teammate Brathwaite in featuring in an unbroken third wicket partnership of 136 as the defending champions closed on 243 for two off overs off 78 overs.

Brathwaite, 29, the West Indies Test captain, with several well-timed strokes, was on 137 off 233 balls in 312 minutes with 12 fours – his 11th ton in the regional four-day Championship – while Reifer was on 55 including eight boundaries off 131 deliveries in 170 minutes.

The pair came together following the dismissals of Shayne Moseley and Shamarh Brooks.

Left-hander Moseley fell cheaply for the third time this season, edging pacer Marquino Mindley to first slip in skipper John Campbell, for four, while Brooks, on-driving, was caught off the leading edge at short extra-cover by Campbell off left-arm spinner Patrick Harty for 39.

Brathwaite looked far more assured than he did in the first round match against Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the same venue last week when he fell to disappointing strokes in both innings in a four-wicket win for his side.

Excelling on the cut, he reached his half-century off 80 balls in 105 minutes with five boundaries and his century in 225 minutes off 178 deliveries containing ten fours.

Reifer took advantage of being dropped before he had scored by Jermaine Blackwood at slip off off-spinner Jamie Merchant to gradually buckle down as he executed a few fine drives down the ground.

Earlier, operating from the Malcolm Marshall end at the south, Reifer undermined the Jamaica batting in a telling spell of 7.1 overs with the second new ball.

He started the debacle by bowling Paul Palmer with a beautiful delivery before he had added to his overnight score of 76.

Palmer put on 133 with fellow left-hander Campbell.

Then Reifer had left-hander Alwyn Williams, well caught at extra-cover by Moseley for two as he drove.

Left-arm fast bowler Ramon Simmonds next bowled wicketkeeper Romaine Morris for nought.

There was no respite.

Campbell, who started the day on 123, was caught at deep backward square-leg by Keon Harding for 127, which came off 228 balls in 381 minutes and included 12 fours and one six.

Mindley was caught by Harding for nine, Merchant was bowled for 12 and Harty edged a catch, first ball, to second slip in Jonathan Carter.
