Rain limits play on first day of Elite division sixth round

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 29 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Rain limited play on the opening day of Series 6 matches in the BCA Elite division three-day Championship today.

By sheer coincidence, the most overs (49.1) were bowled at neighbouring grounds 3Ws Oval and Desmond Haynes Oval.

Forty overs were possible at Waterford ‘A’, only one over was sent down at Queen’s Park and not a ball was bowled at SJPIT.

At 3Ws Oval: Front-runners BWU Gladiola declared their first innings on 103 for nine off 33.1 overs after they were sent in by Sagicor Life UWI, who are second last in the table.

It represented a collapse after the score was 82 for three in the 26th over.

Rivaldo Clarke hit the top-score of 30 off 68 balls in 84 minutes with two fours.

Clarke added 44 for the fourth wicket with fellow former West Indies Under-19 team player Giovonte Depeiza before Depeiza’s dismissal for 27 led to the slump.

Both Clarke and Depeiza were dismissed by off-spinner Tahj Tavernier, who took four for four off 4.1 overs after coming on as the last of four bowlers.

Simeon Gerson picked up three for 48 off 14 overs.

UWI were 52 for four off 16 overs at the close.

Off-spinner Ashley Nurse has two for 19 off eight overs.

At Desmond Haynes Oval: Carlton captain and left-arm spinner Matthew Jones continued his excellent form with a fifth five-for and third on the trot as Empire reached 215 for eight off 49.1 overs after losing the toss.

Jones took five for 66 off 18 overs to push his tally of wickets for the season to 35 – the most.

Medium-pacer Zidane Clarke grabbed the first two wickets – captain Shian Brathwaite, leg before wicket for six and left-hander Hakeem Perryman, bowled for nought.

Clarke has two for 21 off seven overs.

Experienced all-rounder Kevin Stoute made 65 off 79 balls in one-and-a-half hours including three fours and four sixes in his first Elite division match of the season.

Jai-Bari Yarde scored 45 off 58 deliveries with three fours and three sixes, Shakkae Marshall (29) and ShaquilleCumberbatch (23 not out).

Yarde and Stoute added 111 for the third wicket.

At Waterford ‘A’: Unbeaten half-centuries by captain Ian Boyce and Kirk Edwards led Wanderers to 156 for three off 40 overs against bottom-of-the-table SigniaGlobe Financial Barbados Youth, who won the toss.

All-rounder Boyce was on 64 off 101 balls in 136 minutes with three fours and one six, while Edwards, a former Barbados captain and West Indies player, who went to the crease at No. 3, was on 54 off 96 balls in 142 minutes including two boundaries.

Boyce and Edwards have added 120.

Jaason Greene made 26.

Pacer Rashad Worrell has two for 34 off six overs.

Eight bowlers have been used.

At Queen’s Park: Defending champions Fusionz Boutique Spartan were five without loss off one over against St. Catherine after they were sent in.

At SJPIT: Wet conditions prevented play between second-placed Wildey and Bayview Hospital YMPC, who are in third position.
