Now wins for Empire, Carlton as Gladiola lead in Elite division after Series 5

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 23 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Empire and Carlton today joined new front-runners BWU Gladiola as winners in the fifth series of the BCA Elite division Championship.

On the third and final day, Empire beat old rivals and defending champions Fusionz Boutique Spartan by seven wickets at Queen’s Park, while Carlton, inspired by 13-wicket match haul from captain Matthew Jones, crushed beleaguered SigniaGlobe Financial Barbados Youth by 235 runs at Kensington Oval.

Gladiola defeated St. Catherine by ten wickets inside two days at Rices on Saturday to advance to the top of the table on 67 points – eight ahead of second-placed Wildey, who had led for the previous four rounds.

At Queen’s Park: A combination of pace and spin set the stage for Empire’s win.

Following-on with a deficit of 150 and resuming on 20 without loss, Spartan were bowled out for 180.

Joshua Drakes scored a solid 64 off 117 balls with ten fours at No. 5.

Marrodon Bend made 25 and Shavon Brooks 20.

Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican was the leading wicket-taker with four for 35 off 25.4 overs including the wicket of Drakes, who was ninth out, caught at cover.

Fast bowler Jarion Hoyte took three for 33 off 10 overs and left-arm spinner Camarie Boyce, three for 55 off 20 overs.

Requiring 31 to win off 14 overs, Empire triumphed in 8.4 overs. Captain Shian Brathwaite ended the match by swinging left-arm spinner Andre Marshall for six over midwicket in scoring 19 not out.

It was the seventh time since 2005 that Empire had beaten Spartan who won only once.

At Kensington Oval: Left-arm spinner Matthew Jones again wreaked havoc as Carlton registered their first win and condemned Barbados Youth to a fifth defeat.

Jones grabbed eight wickets for seven runs off 8.4 overs for a match haul of 13 for 27 off 21.5 overs as Barbados Youth, set 328 for victory, were bowled out for 89 in 26.4 overs.

Devon Stevenson hit the top score of 30 at No. 9 and Dave Lovell made 21.

It was the fourth five-for of the season for Jones.

At Beckles Road: Despite a determined effort, Bayview Hospital YMPC had to settle for a draw against Sagicor Life UWI in fading light.

From an overnight one without loss in their second innings, UWI were dismissed for 138.

Four batsmen got into the 20s with all-rounder Matthew Forde’s 29 the highest.

Left-arm spinner Shamar Marshall took five for 34 and medium-pacer Dwayne Smith, two for 27.

Chasing 109 to win, YMPC came close, ending on 97 for six.

Shane Dowrich scored 33 and Kemal Smith 28 not out.

Pacer Forde took three for 22 and leg-spinner Javed Leacock, two for 23.
