Joshua Bishop: grabbed 5 for 65 Zachary McCaskie: scored a solid 79
Bridgetown, Barbados, January 7 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – A five-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop and Zachary McCaskie’s solid half-century highlighted play on the second day of the Barbados Pride four-day practice match at Desmond Haynes Oval.
The 21-year-old Bishop grabbed five for 65 off 24.4 overs for Jonathan Carter’s X1, who gained a telling first innings lead of 165 against Kraigg Brathwaite’s X1 for whom opener McCaskie hit 79.
Both Bishop and McCaskie are seeking to make their first-class debuts in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Championship, which starts February 2.
Bishop has played 22 List A (50-over) and seven Twenty20 matches in the Caribbean Premier League, but is determined to show that he also has the ability to be an effective red-ball cricketer.
After another left-arm spinner, Camarie Boyce, aged 22, snatched five for 74 as Carter’s X1 were bowled out for 369 in 86.3 overs from an overnight 343 for eight – Demetrius Richards slammed 105 at No. 5 – Bishop hit back in admirable style.
He triggered a collapse by having Jonathan Drakes caught at cover by Kyle Hope for 40 off 84 balls with five fours and one six following a third wicket partnership of 95 in just under two hours with McCaskie.
Bishop also removed the 25-year-old McCaskie, leg before wicket, padding up to a straight delivery to make it 157 for five after veteran off-spinner Ashley Nurse had stand-in captain Raymon Reifer, leg before wicket, playing back for seven.
McCaskie was at the crease for 230 minutes, faced 169 balls and struck eight fours and one six.
Left-arm fast bowler Ramon Simmonds, who represented West Indies Under-19s at the last ICC Youth World Cup in South Africa two years ago, first yorked West Indies Test batsman Shayne Moseley with a quick delivery for six in the seventh over of the innings.
Leniko Boucher (two) was caught at second slip by Hope off seamer Akeem Jordan.
Following the McCaskie-Drakes stand, wickets fell steadily in a total of 204 off 71.4 overs.
Among them was all-rounder Shamar Springer, leg before wicket by Nurse for one before Bishop had wicketkeeper Tevyn Walcott (11) caught at slip by Nurse and Matthew Forde (also 11), caught at mid-off by Carter.
Carter’s X1 will resume their second innings on 16 for one – an overall lead of 181 – after rookie West Indies pacer Chemar Holder bowled Kadeem Alleyne for eight.
Veteran Barbados Cricket Association coach Dexter Toppin lauded Richards, Boyce, McCaskie and Bishop for their fine performances.
According to Toppin, who was the Barbados Pride head coach at the CWI one-day Championship in Antigua last February, all four are naturally, gifted cricketers.
“For a youngster who is at senior trials for the first time, Demetrius showed great maturity in compiling an excellent hundred. He played some fine shots all around the wicket. It was a very good innings,” Toppin said.
In relation to Boyce, Toppin remarked: “Camarie was very steady and crafty. He bowled a good line and length and showed excellent control from the northern end.”
“Zacs was very steady and solid in his approach at the crease and Bishop bowled with good control. He put the ball in areas and got it to spin off the pitch,” Toppin asserted.
New Lead selector of the West Indies Senior Men’s team, The Most Honourable Desmond Haynes, watched some of the play on both days.
