Bridgetown, Barbados, January 9 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – It took roughly just the first session of play on the fourth and final day for Jonathan Carter’s X1 to complete a 71-run win over Kraigg Brathwaite’s X1 in the Barbados Pride practice match at Desmond Haynes Oval.

Needing 265 for victory and starting the day on 110 for five, Brathwaite’s X1 were bowled out for 193 in 53.1 overs. The match ended eight minutes before the scheduled lunch interval.

Barbados Pride opener Shayne Moseley, who resumed on 49, hit the topscore of 72 off 123 balls in 219 minutes with seven fours and two sixes before he was eighth out.

The 27-year-old Moseley, who has played two Test matches for West Indies – both away against Bangladesh last February – and all-rounder Shamar Springer had given some hope of a fight back by adding 40 in quick time for the sixth wicket, but once they were parted, the end came swiftly.

Springer, one of the heroes of the champion West Indies Under-19 team at the 2016 ICC Youth World Cup in Bangladesh, joined Moseley at the start of the day’s play, Tevyn Walcott having been dismissed by exciting leg-spinner Javed Leacock off the last ball on Saturday.

Opting to attack, Springer scored 23 off 29 balls in 43 minutes with four boundaries before he missed a sweep off Leacock and was leg before wicket.

Fast bowling all-rounder Nyeem Young (five), looking to hit over the top, skied towards mid-on and was caught by Jarion Hoyte off left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop, the first innings hero with five for 65.

Veteran all-rounder, Kevin Stoute, with his medium-pace, then removed Moseley, who flicked into the hands of Ramon Simmonds on the midwicket boundary.

Yet another all-rounder, Matthew Forde, was caught at deep mid-on by Simmonds off Leacock for 17, and Chaim Holder (four) was snapped up at slip by Ashley Nurse off Bishop, leaving his namesake Chemar Holder unbeaten on six.

The 24-year-old Leacock was the leading wicket-taker with four for 38 off 11 overs after he was belated brought on as the seventh of eight bowlers.

Leacock’s performance followed an impressive showing in the Legends Cup four-team Championship, which was cancelled after only one round in late November because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Then, he took six for 80 off 26.2 overs in the second innings (his only bowl of the match) for Sir Charles Griffith X1 in a 10-wicket win over Sir Gordon Greenidge X1 at Weymouth.

Left-armer Simmonds, 20, who represented West Indies Under-19s at the last Youth World Cup in South Africa in 2020, also caught the selectors’ eyes in this match with his lively pace. He picked up two for 26 off 10 overs in the second innings for a match haul of four for 66 from 21 overs, along with three catches in the second innings.

Bishop supported admirably as well with two for 28 off 9.1 overs, giving him a match tally of seven for 93 off 33.5 overs.

The match was in preparation for the Cricket West Indies first-class Championship, which is scheduled to begin on February 2.

Present was the new Lead selector of the West Indies Senior Men’s team, The Most Honourable Desmond Haynes. The ground, home of Carlton Club, is named after the 65-year-old illustrious former Barbados and West Indies opener, who also captained Barbados and West Indies.

Haynes is a former player and president of the Carlton Club, located at Black Rock, St. Michael.
