Harding grabs 4-42 as Barbados dominate against Leewards on opening day

Bridgetown, Barbados, February 9 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Led by a four-wicket haul from fast bowler Keon Harding, defending champions Barbados Pride held the advantage over Leeward Islands Hurricanes on a rain-hit opening day of their first round regional first-class match at Kensington Oval.

Sent in, the Leeward Islands scored 172 for nine declared off 53.3 overs.

The experienced Devon Thomas hit the topscore of 58 off 77 balls in 92 minutes with six fours and three sixes.

Opener Kieran Powell made 43, captain Jahmar Hamilton contributed 29 and Keacy Carty 20.

Harding took four for 42 off 11.3 overs while medium-pacer Jonathan Carter picked up two for nine off six overs after coming on as the last of eight bowlers.

Cautiously, Barbados closed on 27 without loss off 22 overs with captain Kraigg Brathwaite on 11 and Shayne Moseley, eight.

Bowling with good pace, Harding first struck when he had Montcin Hodge caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich for seven in the 10th over of the match.

Luck soon went the way of Carty, who was dropped at fine leg by debutant left-arm pacer Ramon Simmonds from a hookoff fast bowler Chemar Holder before he had scored.

A positive Powell played a few fine strokes and with Carty consolidated to add 52 for the second wicket before West Indies Test left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican had Carty leg before wicket off his very first ball delivery as lunch was taken.

With rain leading to a delayed restart after 50 minutes, Harding then quickly struck as he induced left-hander Powell to pull into the hands of mid-on in Holder.

Powell faced 76 balls in two hours and hit eight boundaries.

Harding added the scalp of another left-hander, Amir Jangoo, who in defending a lifting delivery, was caught at first slip by Brathwaite without scoring.

Thomas and Hamilton then counter attacked as they featured in a fifth wicket partnership of 72 before wickets fell steadily.

Carter accounted for Thomas, caught at mid-on by Simmonds from a miscued pull and two balls later had Rahkeem Cornwall (nought) driving into the hands of Simmonds, again at mid-on.

Medium-pacer Justin Greaves quickly tightened Barbados’ grip by bowling Hamilton.

There was a big moment for the 20-year-old Simmonds when he had Colin Archibald leg before wicket for three.

Harding removed Nino Henry for one by way of a good, low catch at cover by Raymon Reifer.

It led to the declaration, as Jeremiah Louis was feeling unwell with all-rounder Terrence Warde not out on six.
