Half-centuries for Richards, Jordan as Barbados Legends Cup opens

Bridgetown, Barbados, November 26 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Opener Demetrius Richards and Akeem Jordan hit enterprising half-centuries as batters struggled generally on the opening day of Series 1 matches in the 2021 BCA Legends Cup three-day Championship.

Left-hander Richards, who is also a wicketkeeper, topscored with 54, while fast bowling all-rounder Jordan made an unbeaten 52 in a first innings total of 188 all out off 56 overs by Sir Garfield Sobers X1 after they were sent in by Sir Wesley Hall X1 at Desmond Haynes Oval.

There was a solid knock of 42 by batting all-rounder Joshua Drakes, who bowls leg-breaks.

Sir Wesley Hall X1 were 22 for two off 9.3 overs at stumps.

The 20-year-old Richards is a former Ellerslie Secondary School and Barbados Youth player in the BCA Elite division three-day Championship. He represented Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) last year in the Twenty20 Cup – there were no red-ball Competitions due to the Covid-19 pandemic – and joined Maple this year but the season was cancelled because of the pandemic.

Richards dominated the first half of the batting before he was fifth out on the stroke of lunch with the score 80, caught by wicketkeeper Tevyn Walcott to be the second scalp for 20-year-old University of West Indies (UWI) pacer Amari Goodridge, who was the top wicket-taker with four for 33 off nine overs after coming on as the fifth of seven bowlers.

Richards was at the crease for 118 minutes, faced 73 balls and struck eight fours.

The Sir Garfield Sobers X1 had a disastrous start with Zachary McCaskie being caught by Walcott off the very first ball of the match from pacer Stefon King.

Jonathan Drakes, the older brother of 25-year-old Joshua Drakes, also fell for a “duck”, leg before wicket by fast bowler Jaden Edmund after facing as many as 29 balls.

And when captain Raymon Reifer was removed by former West Indies Under-19 team pace bowling all-rounder Matthew Forde for five, it was 29 for three.

Richards and Shamar Springer then added 41 for the fourth wicket before Springer was leg before wicket by Goodridge for 11.

Joshua Drakes struck seven boundaries in his 63-ball knock, while Jordan also faced 63 deliveries as he counted eight fours.

Apart from Goodridge, left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop picked up two for 42 off 10 overs.

At Weymouth, Sir Gordon Greenidge X1 were undermined by a combination of pace and spin as they tumbled for 92 in 41 overs, after losing the toss.

Opener Rashawn Worrell hit the topscore of 30 in 131 minutes off 76 balls with two fours.

Left-arm spinner Camarie Boyce grabbed four for 21 off 10 overs, while Dario Cumberbatch took two for 14 and fellow pacer Jarion Hoyte, two for 28.

Wicketkeeper Tauron Gibson, who is highly taught of as a “glovesman” by former Barbados and West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman David Murray, took five catches.

Sir Charles Griffith X1 closed on 75 without loss off 18 overs with Kyle Hope on 32 and Shian Brathwaite, 31.
