Barbados “sweep” to 56-run defeat against Guyana – CWI CG United Super50 Cup

St. Augustine, Trinidad, October 29 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – With inept batting being a contributing factor, Barbados Pride suffered their first defeat in four matches – by 56 runs against Guyana Harpy Eagles – in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) CG United Super50 Cup Championship here today.

At the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Ground where they have now played three matches, it was downright disappointing with the approach of the majority of batsmen, save the in-form opener Kyle Mayers

Sweeps and reverse sweeps were blatantly in evidence, much to their demise.

Chasing 203 to win in 47 overs – rain having caused a late start to the match – Shai Hope’s team sensationally collapsed from the seemingly comfort of 81 without loss in the 15th over to 146 all out in 39.5 overs.

It meant that effectively 10 wickets tumbled for 65 runs including the last six for 15 runs in 12.4 overs.

Left-hander Mayers was again in the spotlight, hitting 64 off 63 balls including nine fours and one to follow his swashbuckling century of 107 not out off only 52 balls with nine fours and nine sixes against Windward Islands Volcanoes in an eight-wicket triumph at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.

Guyana’s bowling hero was Gutakesh Motie, the 28-year-old West Indies left-arm spinner, who snatched his first ever List A five-for in his 37th match. He took five for 17 off 9.5 overs.

Off-spinner Kevin Sinclair, known for his acrobatic flips in celebrating a wicket, picked up three for 30 off 10 overs including five maidens.

Barbados had motored to 63 off the first 10 overs before Motie ended the first-wicket stand by bowling Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite, for 17, as he essayed a sweep, having also attempted reverse sweeps in his 39-ball knock.

Exactly four overs later, Shamarh Brooks, another international player, also perished leg before wicket as he swept while looking in disbelief as umpire Deighton Butler, a former Windward Islands and West Indies white-ball left-arm pacer, gave the decision.

And off the very next ball, ODI skipper Shai Hope, defending, was bowled off stump by one which spun across him and hit the off stump.

Off the first ball of the following over, Mayers swung one pitched short from slow bowler Kevlon Anderson, bowling from around the wicket, into the hands of deep square-leg.

It meant that three wickets fell in four balls without a run scored.

Roston Chase and fellow all-rounder Raymon Reifer – both with international experience – put on 35 in eight overs before Chase was caught by wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach as he fiddled on the backfoot off Sinclair, for 25.

The end came swiftly.

Left-hander Reifer (eight), going back and trying to turn, was leg before wicket by captain and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul; debutant Kemar Smith was another leg before wicket victim as he swept against Sinclair, for one; Dominic Drakes, driving, was caught and bowled on the second attempt by Sinclair, also for one; and there were ducks for Javed Leacock and Jair McAllister as Motie wrapped up the innings, leaving Jomel Warrican unbeaten on 11.

Leacock, swinging, was snapped up at slip and McAllister, driving, was caught in the covers.

Sent in, Guyana were struggling on 67 for five by the 23rd over but were pulled around by the impressive left-hander Sherfane Rutherford, who slammed 74 off 70 balls with four fours and four sixes at No. 7 to earn the Player Of The Math award.

Kemol Savory (35) and Rutherford added 54 in 11.1 overs for the sixth wicket and then Rutherford dominated a seventh wicket stand of 63 off only nine overs with Motie before the last four wickets crashed for 18 runs in four overs.

Leg-spinner Leacock sustained his good form, taking three for 30 off 6.3 overs, while left-arm medium-pacer Reifer picked up three for 38 off seven overs.
