Dwayne Smith slams sixth BCA T20 Cup ton but YMPC lose to Wildey
Bridgetown, Barbados, May 6 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – In-form veteran Bayview Hospital YMPC all-rounder Dwayne Smith today lifted his record number of centuries in the history of the BCA Twenty20 Cup Championship to six but was on the losing side by three wickets against Wildey.
In the key Series 7 Zone ‘B’ clash at the SJPIT ground, the 40-year-old former Barbados and West Indies player scored 113 off 67 balls with 15 fours and four sixes in a total of 160 for six after YMPC won the toss.
The century took 62 balls and included 12 fours and four sixes.
No other batsman reached double-figures.
Left-arm pacer Jerome Jones grabbed four for 21 off four overs.
Wildey triumphed with nine balls remaining as Barbados Under-19 team all-rounder Jayden Roberts hit 47 not out off 25 balls including four fours and two sixes at No. 7.
Shane Parris made 39 off 32 balls with four fours and one six.
Leg-spinner Mario Miller took two for 18 and Barbados Pride left-arm pacer Ramon Simmonds, two for 21 – both off three overs – but medium-pacer Smith was expensive, picking up one for 51 off four overs.
Along with three half-centuries, Smith now has 327 runs (Ave: 65.40) in five matches this season.
Three of his six hundreds were made last year when he amassed 514 runs (Ave: 73.42). He is the only batsman to score over 500 runs in a season. The Tournament started in 2008.
His other tons were in 2011 and 2012.
Wildey and ESA Field Pickwick are still the only unbeaten teams in Zone ‘B’, on 26 points.
Pickwick demolished winless Little Fabian Enterprises Maple by nine wickets at Foursquare Oval.
In another depressing batting display, Maple crawled to 88 for five off 20 overs after losing the toss. Veteran Shane Ramsay hit the top-score of 28 off 35 balls with four boundaries at No. 4.
Left-arm spinner Rondre Yearwood took two for nine off four overs.
Led by an unbeaten 42 off 12 balls with two fours and four sixes by West Indies ODI captain Shai Hope, Pickwick took just 6.2 overs to reach the target.
With Shamar Forde (38 not out off 20 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes), No. 3 Hope added 73 off 26 balls.
Hope is yet to be dismissed in three innings with his other scores being 70 (17 balls) and 47 (19 balls).
In the other Zone ‘B’ matches, Carlton beat SigniaGlobe Financial BCA Youth ‘A’ by seven wickets at Desmond Haynes Oval, Wanderers beat Police by 48 runs at Weymouth and UWI ‘B’ defeated IDL Walkers Sand Quarry Isolation Cavaliers by 40 runs at 3Ws Oval.
There were half-centuries for the Wanderers and West Indies Test captain and opener Kraigg Brathwaite (78 not out), Carlton’s Leniko Boucher (72 not out) and UWI ‘B’ middle order batsman Jai Clarke (53 not out).
In Zone ‘A’, Empire stepped up their bid for a place in the quarter-finals with a 43-run win over defending champions UWI ‘A’ at Bank Hall.
Led by unbeaten half-centuries from West Indies player Roston Chase and fellow all-rounder Kevin Stoute, Empire scored 172 for two off 20 overs.
Chase, in his first match of the season, made 71 not out off 44 balls with nine threes and four fours, and Stoute 69 not out off 65 balls including six threes and three fours.
Stoute now has the highest aggregate of 337 for the season including three half-centuries, at an average of 67.40.
UWI ‘A’ were bowled out for 129 in 16.5 overs as leg-spinner Kevin Wickham snatched the last three wickets for three runs in five balls.
BWU Gladiola, the only team with maximum points, beat IGS Insurance Brokers Yorkshire by three wickets at Friendship, SigniaGlobe Financial BCA Youth ‘B’ upset Fusionz Boutique Spartan by 15 runs at the Harrison College ‘A’ ground, Crumpton Street, St. Catherine defeated newcomers Windward by three runs at Lucas Street and Foundation School recorded their first win – by 24 runs – against Lords at Church Hill.
