Dowrich, Springer hit half-centuries to lift Barbados against Leewards

Bridgetown, Barbados, February 10 – ( – Shane Dowrich and Shamar Springer struck enterprising half-centuries to help Barbados Pride to a commanding 152-run first innings lead against Leeward Islands Hurricanes on the second day of the first round regional first-class match at Kensington Oval.

With fortunes fluctuating, the pair rescued the defending champions from a worrying 124 for five by adding 175 in 209 minutes.

Wicketkeeper/batter Dowrich, no doubt anxious to regain his place in the West Indies Test team for the three-match series against England next month after a two-year absence due to a finger injury and personal concerns, scored 86 while all-rounder Springer fell for a career-best 91.

Barbados Pride were bowled out for 324 off 113.2 overs in reply to a total of 172 for nine declared off 53.3 overs, thus earning three vital batting points.

The Dowrich-Springer stand could not have come at a better time, as they mixed fine strokes with solid defence before both were dismissed in disappointing fashion.

Springer faced 181 balls and hit seven fours and three sixes while Dowrich struck nine fours off 154 balls in his 254-minute innings.

Starting the day on 27 without loss, Barbados first lost left-hander Shayne Moseley, caught at second slip by Kieran Powell off left-arm pacer Colin Archibald for 13 from his overnight score of eight.

After looking fairly solid, captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who resumed on 11 and scored 29, uncharacteristically essayed a slog off medium-pacer Devon Thomas and edged a regulation catch to wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton immediately after he was dropped at extra-cover by substitute Kofie James.

The left-handed pair of Raymon Reifer and Jonathan Carter then added 43 before Carter, in trying to play through the onside, was caught at short extra-cover by Montcin Hodge off off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall for 25.

Reifer was dismissed for 23 off the first ball after lunch, edging Archibald to Hamilton.

And when Justin Greaves was caught at first slip by Cornwall off Archibald for seven, there would have been some concern for Barbados.

But Dowrich, watched by West Indies lead selector, The Most Honourable Desmond Haynes, showed a cool head and along with Springer rebuilt the innings.

Springer was caught at midwicket by Keacy Carty off Cornwall, who removed Keon Harding off the next ball, and Jomel Warrican and Dowrich fell shortly afterwards.

Warrican was bowled by Cornwall for two and Dowrich clipped off-spinner Terrence Warde into the hands of midwicket in Powell.

Fast bowler Chemar Holder enjoyed himself, clobbering three sixes in scoring 22 off 11 balls before he was bowled by Warde.

Cornwall took four for 99 off 33 overs, Archibald three for 47 off 20 overs and Warde, two for 42 off 14.2 overs.
