Three hit 50s in Barbados’ 302-9 declared v Guyana as CWI 3-day Championship opens

Kingstown, St. Vincent, July 15 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Three batsmen hit half-centuries as Barbados made 302 for nine declared off 86 overs in their first innings against Guyana on the opening day of Round 1 in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars men’s Under-19 three-day Championship at Park Hill today.

Wicketkeeper Joshua Morris top-scored with 59 off 90 balls including four fours and two sixes at No. 5.

Joshua Dorne, easily Barbados’ leading batsman in a disappointing display in the just concluded 50-over Tournament where they finished second last in defence of the title, which was captured by Jamaica with one round remaining, sustained his fine form with 56 off 86 balls. He struck eight fours and one six.

It was Dorne’s third consecutive half-century across formats, having made 68 against Leeward Islands and 64 off Jamaica in an aggregate of 180 (Ave: 38.00) in the one-day Championship.

And left-hander Nimar Bolden scored 50 off 62 balls with six fours and three sixes.

Opener Achilles Browne, who had a wretched 50-over tournament in which made only 18 runs (Ave: 4.50) in four matches, batted solidly for 46 off 141 balls including five boundaries following the early dismissal of Zion Brathwaite, who was bowled by West Indies Under-19 pacer Isai Thorne for eight after Barbados won the toss.

There were useful contributions from the all-round trio of Jaden Leacock (23 not out), Jayden Roberts (22) and captain Nathan Sealy (19).

Thorne was the leading wicket-taker with three for 77 for 20 overs.

Jeremy Sandia picked up two for 45 and Jonathan Rampersaud, two for 77.

Guyana closed on two without loss of two overs.
