Johnson hits unbeaten century to rescue Jamaica against Barbados on opening day of CWI Under-19 Final
Kingstown, St. Vincent, July 30 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Jordan Johnson struck an unbeaten century and shared in an unfinished century partnership with Brian Barnes to rescue Jamaica against red-hot Barbados on the first day of the Final in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars men’s Under-19 three-day Championship at Arnos Vale today.
Sent in following a late start because of rain, Jamaica were struggling on 78 for four by the 33rd over before left-handers Johnson and Barnes fought back to carry the score to 217 for four off 79 overs by stumps.
Johnson, who went to the crease at No. 3, was on 118 off 226 balls in 191 minutes with seven fours and one six, while Barnes was on 59 off 144 deliveries including just one boundary in a partnership of 139, which has so far stretched for 111 minutes.
Jamaica first lost Adrian Weir (three), who was brilliantly caught, low to his left at backward-square by Jaden Leacock, who ran in and dived as the batsman essayed a pull off fast bowler Raneico Smith with the score six in the fifth over.
Nathan Sealy, the inspirational Barbados captain who went into the match as the most successful bowler in the Tournament with 25 scalps with his team winning all three of their matches, struck with only his fifth delivery. Trevaun Williams, groping, was leg before wicket for 10 to make it 28 for two in the 13th over.
Off-spinner Saurav Worrell, with his very first ball, removed left-hander Steven Wederburn for six, caught at slip to his right by Joshua Dorne as the batsman drove with the score 51 in the 22nd over.
At lunch the score was 59 for three off 24 overs with Johnson on 34 and Justin Beckford, nought.
Off the fifth ball of the 33rd over with the score 78, Sealy had Beckford caught low at slip by Dorne for nine as he pushed forward uncertainly.
But Johnson and Barnes buckled down to pull their team around.
Sealy has two for 51 off 20 overs.
