Clarke, Parris hit half-centuries as Bolden’s X1 triumph by 10 wickets in third Barbados Under-19 trial

Bridgetown, Barbados, July 11 – ( – Two players who are expected to be among a squad of 56 slated to assemble in Antigua next month for four practice matches as the West Indies Under-19s step up preparations for next year’s ICC World Cup, hit impressive half-centuries in the third Barbados Under-19 one-day trial match at Brighton.  Rivaldo Clarke emerged from single digit scores in the first two matches to slam 77 in his team’s 158 for nine off 30 overs as rain again impacted on Sunday, before Shaqkere Parris blasted an unbeaten 75 to spur Nimar Bolden’s side to a 10-wicket win on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method with 5.1 overs remaining, chasing a revised target of 113 in 20 overs.

Clarke represented both the Barbados Under-17 and Under-19 teams in the last regional Tournaments two years ago. He is a gifted all-round player, best known for his batting, but can also keep wicket and bowl off-spin.

The COVID-19 pandemic wiped out Cricket West Indies (CWI) junior Tournaments last year and again this season, and Clarke would have been worried about his form going into the match after he was dismissed for one off five balls in the first game on July 4 and one again off two balls on Saturday.

A product of St. Leonard’s Boys’ and The Lodge School, Clarke went to the crease at No. 4 with the score 16 for two off four overs and dominated before he was ninth out, caught on the long-on boundary by Giovonte Depeiza off fast bowler Rashad Worrell in the last over of the innings.

Clarke faced 74 balls and struck seven fours and three sixes.

Only two other batsmen reached double-figures – Foundation’s Kamario Grant (19) and Tariq O’Neale (10) of The St. Michael School. Both were run out in partnership with Clarke.

The most productive stand was 34 off just 14 balls for the ninth wicket between Clarke and Venice Vaughan, who did not contribute as Clarke took centre stage with 32.

Worrell, a St. Leonard’s boy, took two for 30 and the enthusiastic Foundation pacer Jakeem Forde, two for 50 – both off six overs.

Then Parris and Achilles Browne made light work of the target.

Parris, who hails from Alexandra school and impressed with the second most runs all told (268) including three half-centuries for Barbados Youth in the 2020 BCA Elite/Division 1 Twenty20 Cup Championship, struck three fours and six sixes off 59 balls in his 75 not out. His sixes were blasted mainly over long-on and midwicket off the spinners.

Browne, an Alleyne student, made 27 not out off 31 deliveries with one boundary.

A fourth and final trial match is scheduled for July 17, yet again at Brighton, starting at 9:30 a.m.

The 2022 Under-19 World Cup (the 14th edition) will be played in the West Indies for the first time from January 4 to February 5.

After the four practice matches in Antigua, the West Indies squad will be reduced from 56 to 25.
