St. John’s, Antigua, November 22 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Versatile Barbadian Rivaldo Clarke and Justin Beckford of Jamaica struck half-centuries in the second West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 one-day warm-up match at Coolidge on Monday.
Clarke, an enterprising batter, who is also a wicketkeeper and occasional spin bowler, hit 51 off 50 balls with four fours and one six to help Squad A, again led by his compatriot, all-rounder Giovonte Depeiza, to a two-wicket win with just two balls remaining over Squad B, captained by Ackeem Auguste.
Beckford scored 52 off 75 deliveries including three fours and one six at No. 6 for Squad B, who were bowled out for 225 in 49.3 overs after winning the toss.
He featured in a sixth-wicket partnership of 81 in 15.3 overs with Nevisian wicketkeeper/batter Carlon Bowen-Tuckett, who made 45 off 48 deliveries with six fours.
Guyanese opening batsman Matthew Nandu scored 39 off 69 balls as he counted five boundaries, while Jaden Leacock, a pace bowling all-rounder from Barbados, contributed 23 off 22 deliveries including three fours at No. 9.
Left-arm medium-pacer Andel Gordon of Jamaica was the top wicket-taker with three for 31 off eight overs.
There were two wickets each for the tall Barbadian pacer Johann Layne, off-spinner Onaje Amory of the Leeward Islands and off-spinner Jaden Carmichael, another Leeward Islander, for 33, 34 and 52 runs respectively.
In a battle of fluctuating fortunes, Squad A were under some pressure at 74 for five in the 19th over before Clarke and Depeiza added 80 in 15.5 overs for the sixth wicket.
Depeiza scored 24 off 50 balls before he was leg before wicket by Amrit Dass of Trinidad & Tobago in the 35th over.
Clarke, who went to the crease at No. 6, fell in the next over from the impressive Guyanese fast bowler Isai Thorne. It was another fine match for Clarke, who also took two catches behind the stumps, lifting his victims to six while not conceding a bye so far with two matches remaining.
Sion Hackett of Trinidad & Tobago and Carmichael then featured in a telling eight-wicket stand of 69 off 14.1 overs before Thorne removed Hackett for 31 off 39 balls containing one four and one six, with one run needed to win.
Carmichael made 31 not out off 49 with three fours.
There were also useful contributions from Grenadian Teddy Bishop (23) and Barbadian Kevin Wickham (22).
Thorne, 17, the star bowler on the West Indies Under-19s six-match “One-Day International” tour of England in September with eight wickets (Ave: 23.00; ER: 5.11) in four matches, grabbed four for 48 off 9.4 overs.
West Indies Under-19s are preparing for the ICC Youth World Cup to be hosted in the Caribbean for the first time next January and February.
