Chemar Holder: grabbed 5-24
Bridgetown, Barbados, January 8 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Displaying excellent accuracy, Chemar Holder became the third bowler and first pacer to snatch a five-for in the Barbados Pride four-day practice match at Desmond Haynes Oval.
On a dramatic third day when 14 wickets tumbled for 193 runs, Holder, who has played one Test match and one One-Day International for West Indies, took five for 24 off 11 overs as Jonathan Carter’s X1 were dismissed for 99 in their second innings against Kraigg Brathwaite’s X1.
Set 265 to win, Brathwaite’s X1 were under pressure at the close on 110 for five with opener Shayne Moseley on 49.
Starting the day on 16 for one, Carter’s X1 were jolted by the 23-year-old Chemar Holder, who bowled a remarkable line and length, coupled with good rhythm.
Two of his victims were bowled and one leg before wicket as he hauled in the first four wickets of the innings.
Left-hander Carter was the only batter to occupy the crease for more than an hour. He hit the topscore of 31 off 56 balls in 85 minutes with four boundaries before he was seventh out with the score 88, brilliantly caught at slip by Leniko Boucher, diving to his right off off-spinner Chaim Holder as he played back.
Chaim Holder finished with three for 37 off nine overs and medium-pacer Shamar Springer, two for 33 off 14 overs.
Brathwaite’s X1 were under early pressure in the second innings and eventually four batters were caught in the slips.
Zachary McCaskie, who topscored in the first innings with 79, was caught at third slip by Akeem Jordan off lively left-arm fast bowler Ramon Simmonds for four in the fourth over of the innings.
In the next over, Boucher was caught at third slip by Kyle Hope off seamer Jordan for one and when Jonathan Drakes (9) fell to a second slip catch by Ashley Nurse off Simmonds, the score was 36 for three.
Moseley, who has played two Test matches, then featured in a fourth-wicket stand of 72 with fellow left-hander Raymon Reifer, also with international experience, before Reifer was caught at mid-off by Simmonds off leg-spinner Javed Leacock for 41, which came off 61 balls in 82 minutes and included three fours and two sixes.
Leacock also accounted for wicketkeeper/batter Tevyn Walcott, caught at slip by Nurse without scoring.
Apart from Chemar Holder, the other bowlers who have taken five-wicket hauls in the match are both left-arm spinners – Camarie Boyce (5-74) and Joshua Bishop (5-65).
The match is in preparation for the regional first-class Championship, which starts February 2.
