Chase slams century as Empire crush Gladiola to take Super Cup title

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 16 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Spurred by a superb century from all-rounder Roston Chase, Empire demolished BWU Gladiola by 200 runs to capture the 2022 BCA Elite/Division 1 Super Cup Championship at Kensington Oval today.

In a lop-sided Final, Empire amassed 322 for nine off 50 overs after winning the toss.

Displaying several fine strokes, Chase, a West Indies player, made 100 off 79 balls with eight fours and four sixes. He also took two wickets for 25 runs off six overs with his off-spin to earn the Player Of The Match award.

Chase added 73 in 12 overs for the third wicket with the gifted 19-year-old Kevin Wickham, who scored 59 off 57 balls including seven fours and two sixes and then featured in a fourth wicket partnership of 130 in 16.2 overs with the experienced Kevin Stoute, who made 48 off 50 deliveries with four boundaries.

Empire first lost Jai-Bari Yarde, bowled by left-arm spinner Richard Sampson for 16 after putting on 42 in 8.2 overs with Shian Brathwaite.

The 32-year-old Yarde was the only batsman to score over 500 runs in the Tournament, ending with 511 including a record three centuries in a season at an average of 63.87.

Brathwaite was next out, caught at the wicket by Martin Nurse off medium-pacer Shakeel Turney for 24 in the 12th over.

Wickham played some fine strokes before he was caught at long-on off off-spinner Michael Agard Jr.

Left-arm spinner Damario Goodman, who took five for 43 off eight overs, removed Chase, caught just inside the square-leg boundary, and also accounted for Stoute, who was caught at long-on.

Captain Kofie Hurdle contributed 25.

Gladiola started disastrously, losing their first three wickets with the score on eight.

Skipper Giovonte Depeiza and Renaldo Brathwaite added 42 in 6.3 overs for the fourth wicket before Depeiza fell for 21.

Brathwaite, who topscored with 30 off 38 balls, and an attacking Martin Nurse put on 43 in 4.4 overs for the sixth wicket.

Left-hander Nurse made 24 off 15 balls including one fours and three sixes and Sampson contributed 20.

Both were dismissed by left-arm spinner Camarie Boyce who was the leading wicket-taker with four for 26 off 7.3 overs, as Gladiola were bowled out for 122 in 24.3 overs.
