Carter, Harding lift Barbados to a 4-wicket win over Leeward Islands

Bridgetown, Barbados, February 12 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Spurred by an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 67 between Jonathan Carter and Keon Harding, Barbados Pride beat Leeward Islands Hurricanes by four wickets on the fourth and final day of the first round regional first-class match at Kensington Oval.

Chasing 195 to win in 66 overs, the defending champions were under pressure on 128 for six in the 37th over before the experienced Carter, with excellent support from fast bowler Harding, buckled down to reach the target in 54.2 overs.

Left-hander Carter, 34, who made his first-class debut 14 years ago, coincidentally against the Leeward Islands, mixed solid defence with well-timed strokes in hitting the topscore of 71 not out.

He batted for three hours, faced 131 balls and struck five fours and two sixes.

Along with match figures of three for 23 including two for nine in the first innings, and four catches in the second innings, Carter was named Player Of The Match.

Harding, who has been working diligently on his batting in the nets, made 23 not out off 57 deliveries in 86 minutes with three fours.

Carter and Harding came together at a critical stage after fast bowler Jeremiah Louis, in an inspired spell from the Joel Garner end, prised out first innings batting heroes Shane Dowrich and Shamar Springer in successive overs and was actually on a hat-trick.

Both were bowled middle stump – Dowrich for four off the last ball of the 35th over and Springer off the first ball of the 37th.

Effectively, it meant that Barbados had lost four wickets for 28 runs with the collapse starting in the very first ball after tea when Louis forced Raymon Reifer to edge a regulation catch to wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton.

Left-hander Reifer made 45 off 73 balls in 100 minutes with five boundaries.

He added 58 for the second wicket with captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who scored 29 before he was bowled by off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall as he hit across.

After Reifer’s dismissal, Justin Greaves, pushing forward, was leg before wicket by Cornwall for six.

Louis had removed Shayne Moseley for three as early as the third over, caught at second slip by Kieran Powell.

Amidst growing tension during the Carter-Harding partnership, Carter was dropped on 53 at slip by substitute Kofi James off Cornwall with 22 runs still required for victory.

Louis took four for 50 off 14 overs while Cornwall had two for 69 off 24 overs.

Earlier, the Leeward Islands were bowled out for 346 in their second innings after resuming on 294 for seven.

With rain allowing only 18 overs in the first session, they moved to 339 for nine at lunch.

Ramon Simmonds, the 20-year-old left-arm fast bowler in his debut match, accounted for captain Hamilton and Colin Archibald in the space of three deliveries.

Hamilton was bowled, playing on after adding seven to his overnight 40, while left-hander Archibald was caught at second slip by Carter for nought.

Louis showed his all-round ability by scoring 44 after starting the day on 14 before he was caught at slip by Carter off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican.

Simmonds impressed with four for 64 off 21 overs and a match tally of five for 86.
