Carlton demoted for second time from BCA Elite division Championship

Bridgetown, Barbados, December 3 – ( – For the second time since the BCA promotion and demotion system started in 2009, Carlton have been relegated to the Division 1 competition.

It comes after the eighth and penultimate round in the Elite division three-day Championship.

An eight-wicket defeat against title challengers Empire at Desmond Haynes Oval in which they picked up only seven points, left Carlton on 35 points – still second last in the table.

SigniaGlobe Financial BCA Youth, on 27 points, are exempt from relegation.

Pressure had mounted on Carlton to win today after Fusionz Boutique Spartan, who were in the relegation zone, defeated Bayview Hospital YMPC by ten wickets to earn maximum 20 points at Beckles Road, thus moving to seventh place on 58 points.

Wanderers, now eighth on 56 points, held defending champions and front-runners Wildey to a draw at Dayrells Road.

Wildey are on 95 points with Empire moving into second position on 87.

Carlton were first demoted in 2013 and returned to the top division in 2019.

At Desmond Haynes Oval: With a first innings deficit of 23 and starting the day on six for one, Carlton were bowled out for 152.

Left-arm spinner Camarie Boyce was the leading wicket-taker with three for 45.

Empire raced to their target of 130 in 17.2 overs, led by captain and opener Shian Brathwaite, who scored 59 not out off 44 balls with three fours and three sixes.

At Beckles Road: Following-on with a deficit of 193 and resuming on 96 for four, YMPC made 209.

Javon Grosvenor hit the top-score of 51.

Off-spinner Chaim Holder took three for 26 and leg-spinner Joshua Drakes, three for 66.

Spartan knocked off 17 needed for victory in three overs.

At 3Ws Oval: Despite a boundary-studded, maiden century from all-rounder Ryshon Williams, IGS Insurance Brokers Yorkshire lost by nine wickets to UWI.

Williams made 101 off 67 balls with three fours and 12 sixes after resuming on 61 with the score 127 for three in the second innings.

Yorkshire were bowled out for 228.

Off-spinner Romario Greaves took four for 46 and pacer Chemar Holder, four for 48.

UWI achieved their winning target of 140 in 22.1 overs as Damel Evelyn made 53 not out off 58 balls with three fours and two sixes to follow his first innings top-score as well (71).

At Rices: BWU/Superb Blend Gladiola overcame BCA Youth by seven runs in an exciting finish.

Starting the day on 139 for six in the second innings, Gladiola dramatically did not add with two players absent including all-rounder Giovonte Depeiza, who was to resume his innings.

Depeiza, however, made up with the ball by snatching four for 45 with his left-arm spin as BCA Youth, chasing 139 to win, fell for 130.

Another left-arm spinner, Matthew Jones, took three for 34.

At Dayrells Road: West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite hit his second century of the season and Jonathan Drakes made 97 as Wanderers battled to a draw against front-runners Wildey, who are seeking to retain the title.

Led on first innings by 89 and resuming on 16 for two, Wanderers reached 246 for six when play was called off as soon as Brathwaite got to his hundred.

Brathwaite’s 103 not out came off 175 balls and included nine fours and one six, while Drakes faced 152 deliveries and counted 14 fours before he was caught and bowled by left-arm spinner Deswin Currency.
