Campbell hits unbeaten century as Jamaica dominate against Barbados

Bridgetown, Barbados, February 15 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Captain John Campbell struck a solid, unbeaten century as Jamaica Scorpions dominated play on the first day of the second round regional first-class match against Barbados Pride at Kensington Oval.

With the luck of the toss on a placid pitch, left-hander Campbell was on 123 not out – his sixth first-class hundred – in a first innings total of 299 for three off 81.3 overs before rain forced an early close at 4:44 p.m.

The 28-year-old Campbell played some confident shots and was strong on the drive, cut and pull. He has hit 12 fours and one six off 205 balls in 342 minutes.

Campbell has featured in an unfinished partnership of 131 with another left-hander and former Jamaica skipper, Paul Palmer, who was on 76 off 106 balls including nine fours and two sixes in just over two hours.

It was a tough day for the defending champions who did not help their cause by dropping three catches.

When 26 with the score 50, Campbell was put down at gully by Shamar Springer off left-arm fast bowler Ramon Simmonds.

Campbell and an attacking Leroy Lugg added 71 in 12.5 overs for the first wicket before Lugg was caught at long-on by Keon Harding off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican for 39 off 41 balls containing four fours and three sixes.

Medium-pacer Springer accounted for Jermaine Blackwood (one) by way of a sharp catch, low to his left at gully by Warrican with the score 77.

Shortly afterwards, Barbados captain Kraigg Brathwaite dropped Nkrumah Bonner at short mid-off before he had scored, off Warrican.

Campbell reached his half-century off 107 balls in 159 minutes with six fours.

Bonner scored 49 off 117 balls including six fours and one six, putting on 91 with Campbell in 124 minutes before he was well caught at second slip by Warrican off medium-pacer Jonathan Carter.

Campbell’s century came in 284 minutes off 179 balls with ten fours and one six.

In the following over, Palmer was put down on 33 at second slip by Carter off Springer.

Palmer got to his half-century in 82 minutes off 70 balls with eight boundaries.
