Browne hits only half-century in 57-run win by Bolden’s team in fourth Barbados Under-19 trial

Bridgetown, Barbados, July 17 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Opener Achilles Browne struck the only half-century of the fourth and final Barbados Under-19 one-day trial match as Nimar Bolden’s X1 beat Rivaldo Clarke’s X1 by 57 runs (DLS method) at Brighton on Saturday.

Browne, a 16-year-old fifth form student at The Alleyne School, made a confident 59 off 106 balls with two fours and one six in a total of 207 for seven off 40 overs by Bolden’s team after they were sent in following a late start by an-hour-and-a-half because of wet conditions caused by overnight rain.

The in-form Browne featured in a fifth wicket partnership of 77 in 12.2 overs with Kwame Patton – the best of the match – after they came together at 90 for four in the 22nd over.

Left-hander Patton, of The Lodge School, caught the eyes of West Indies Under-19 team head coach Floyd Reifer as well with an aggressive 39 off 33 balls including three fours and two sixes before, in essaying a drive, he was caught and bowled by Alleyne School left-arm spinner Venice Vaughan.

Browne, a grandson of the Queen’s College principal, Dr. David V.C. Browne, who watched the trials along with Achilles’ mother, Desiree Browne, was seventh out with the score 178, leg before wicket by fast bowler Johann Layne, a Lodge boy. Layne also picked up Browne’s opening partner, the promising Shaqkere Parris of Alexandra, bowled for 21 off 24 balls.

It was Browne’s second half-century in the trials as he boasted of amassing the most runs (166) while finishing with the best average (83.00) as well.

Rashad Worrell, a pacer from St. Leonard’s Boys’, showed that he is no slouch with the bat as he lashed 21 not out off 13 deliveries containing one four and two sixes.

Layne took two for 31 off seven overs.

Set a revised target of 200 off 37 overs, Clarke’s X1 lost wickets steadily and were restricted to 142 for nine.

Jayden Roberts of The St. Michael School top-scored with 26 off 43 balls including two sixes at No. 6, and Foundation’s Isaiah Folkes contributed 22 not out off 43 deliveries.

Off-spinning all-rounder Thierry Walcott, formerly of Frederick Smith Secondary, took two for 17 off five overs.

For bragging rights, Bolden’s X1 triumphed 3-1 after losing the opening match.

The matches were in preparation for the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup (the 14th edition), which is to be hosted by West Indies for the first time with 16 teams taking part (January 4 to February 5).

A 56-member squad will soon be selected, following an original list of 44, for a camp in Antigua from August 1-27. Four practice matches will then be played before the squad is cut to 25.
