Blades (5-25), Corbin (69) spur UWI ‘A’ to record sixth BCA T20 Cup

Bridgetown, Barbados, June 11 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Left-arm pacer Jediah Blades grabbed the first ever five-wicket haul in a BCA Twenty20 Cup Final and captain Kyle Corbin hit a boundary-studded half-century to spur Sagicor Life UWI ‘A’ to a 58-run win against Carlton at the North Stars ground, Crab Hill, St. Lucy, today.

Blades took five for 25 off four overs as Carlton, chasing 196 to win, were bowled out for 137 in 19.3 overs.

After losing the toss and the first two wickets cheaply, UWI ‘A’ amassed 195 for nine – the highest total in a Final. The previous best of 186 for seven was also made by UWI against BDFSP in 2016 at 3Ws Oval.

Corbin hit the topscore of 69 off 30 balls including six fours and six sixes before he was fourth out, run out, with the score 149 after 16 overs.

Medium-pacer Zidane Clarke had prised out Zachary McCaskie (six) and Shaqkere Parris (two) to leave the score 13 for two by the third over before Johann Jeremiah and fellow left-hander Jonathan Carter added 47 in five overs.

Carter easily dominated, scoring 39 off 21 balls with three fours and one six before pulling fast bowler Nyeem Young into the hands of midwicket.

Corbin timed the ball sweetly as he put on 89 in 8.5 overs with Jeremiah, who made 37 off 44 balls.

Young took three for 27 and Clarke, three for 33.

Barbados Pride pacer Keon Harding was treated harshly, finishing with one for 54 off three overs.

Carlton were scoring at nine runs an over with only two wickets down before a sensational collapse resulted in seven wickets tumbling for 34 runs in 6.5 overs.

The most productive partnership of 38 off four overs was for the third wicket between opener Leniko Boucher and Young before off-spinner Romario Greaves had Young caught at point for 28 off the first ball of the 10th over and Boucher, caught at long-off for 37 off the next delivery, to finish with two for 14 off four overs.

Blades, who had removed in-form left-hander Rashawn Worrell for 11, caught at mid-on, in his first spell of two overs following a first wicket stand of 30, returned to snatch four wickets for 15 runs in an admirable display.

No. 10 Daniel Babb managed 26.

It was a record sixth title for UWI in seven Finals, while Carlton lost for the first time in three Finals.

UWI’s other titles were in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Carlton were champions in 2009 and 2019.
