K. Brathwaite, Depeiza hit unbeaten half-centuries in rain-ruined last round Legends Cup

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 5 – (www.barbadoscricket.org)- West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite and former West Indies Under-19 skipper Giovonte Depeiza, both hit unbeaten half-centuries before heavy, consistent rain in the afternoon forced no results in the third and final round of matches in the 2023 BCA Legends 50-over Series today.

At Foursquare Oval: Opener Brathwaite, just back from representing Warwickshire in the dying stages of the English County Championship where he struggled for runs, scored 60 not out off 95 balls with four boundaries as Sir Gordon Greenidge Trailblazers reached 110 for two off 28 overs against Sir Wesley Hall Chiefs before rain ended play.

After being sent in, Wanderers’ Brathwaite and Akeem Springer, the Fusionz Boutique Spartan captain, added 50 in 12.4 overs before Springer fell to BWU/Superb Blend Gladiola left-arm spinner Matthew Jones for 20 off 30 balls with two fours and one six.

Wildey left-hander Demetrius Richards, who scored the most runs (382; Ave: 47.75) in the league phase of the ongoing BCA Super Cup Championship, then put on 60 off 15.2 overs with Brathwaite.

Richards was bowled by off-spinner Chaim Holder for 21 off 43 deliveries.

At Dayrells Road: After losing two early wickets, Sir Charles Griffith Titans, who won the toss, recovered to score 167 for four off 33 overs against Sir Garfield Sobers Giants before rain had the final say.

The early problems were caused by UWI left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop, who will be representing the West Indies Academy in the regional CG United Super50 Cup in Trinidad, October 17 to November 11.

Bishop snapped up clubmate Shaqkere Parris (six) and skipper Jonathan Drakes (1) in successive overs to leave the score 18 for two by the eighth over.

Parris boasted of the second most runs (369; Ave: 52.71) at the end of the league phase in the current BCA Super Cup Championship.

Opener Seth Agard, a promising Wanderers player, then put on 42 off 6.1 overs with Spartan wicketkeeper/batsman Tauron Gibson before Gibson was dismissed by fast bowler Keon Harding for 13.

Harding, 26, however, continued to be plagued with getting his radar right, apart from being expensive, as has been the case from the opening round. He took one for 31 off three overs including 13 wides and three no-balls.

Having played in all three matches, Harding sent down 11 overs for 135 runs including a whopping 39 wides and 14 no-balls in picking up three wickets (Econ: 12.27; Ave: 45.00).

Harding has played 22 List A matches following his debut for Combined Campuses & Colleges in 2017, and a solitary One-Day International against Bangladesh two years ago. He has also turned out in 21 first-class matches.

The 20-year-old Depeiza, a right-hand batsman and left-arm spin bowler, who plays for Gladiola, joined Agard in putting on 59 in 10.1 overs before left-hander Agard was stumped by Zidane Harewood off Bishop for 39 off 73 balls with two fours and two sixes.

An enterprising Depeiza was on 53 off 54 balls including five fours and two sixes in partnership with Wildey allrounder Jayden Roberts (26 not out) when the rain ended play.

Bishop took three for 21 off 10 overs.
