Clarke, McCaskie slam tons in Round 2 of Legends 50-over Series
Bridgetown, Barbados, September 28 – (www.barbadoscricket.org)- Two centuries were slammed with identical scores on either side of the same match, which produced 655 runs and one batsman missed a ton by eight runs in Round 2 of the 2023 BCA Legends 50-over Series today.
Rivaldo Clarke, fresh from representing Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League, made 137 for Sir Wesley Hall Chiefs against Sir Garfield Sobers Giants, who triumphed by one wicket with three balls remaining as Zachary McCaskie also struck 137 in an exciting finish at Desmond Haynes Oval.
Jonathan Drakes fell for 92 as his team Sir Charles Griffith Titans lost by 58 runs to Sir Gordon Greenidge Trail Blazers at Lucas Street.
At Desmond Haynes Oval: On a pitch tailor-made for batting, Clarke and McCaskie took the spotlight.
After winning the toss, the Chiefs amassed 327 for nine off 50 overs.
Batting at No. 4, Clarke, the 20-year-old BWU/Superb Blend Gladiola wicketkeeper/batsman and former West Indies Under-19 player, scored 137 off 93 balls including 16 fours and four sixes.
He added 114 in 18 overs for the fourth wicket with the Fusionz Boutique Spartan wicketkeeper/batsman Tauron Gibson, who scored 58 off 57 balls with three fours and four sixes.
After three wickets fell for just five runs in nine balls, Clarke then went into high gear, putting on 77 in 7.5 overs with Chaim Holder for the seventh wicket of which Clarke scored 68.
Left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop took two for 54 off 10 overs, pacer Keon Harding, two for 57 off six overs – again being the most expensive bowler (he was lashed for 47 runs off two overs without taking a wicket against Trail Blazers) – and leg-spinner Javed Leacock, two for 74 off 10 overs.
Opener McCaskie, 26, a Barbados first-class and List A player, then responded in calculated style.
His 137 came off 129 balls and included 14 fours and three sixes before he was seventh out with the score 260 at the end of the 43rd over.
McCaskie, who has returned to Elite division three-day champions Wildey this season after a couple years with UWI, put on 107 in 14.3 overs for the second wicket with Zidane Harewood, who made 44 for 43 balls with five fours and one six after left-hander Rashawn Worrell fell to seamer Shaquille Cumberbatch without scoring.
After being 150 for five by the 25th over, the Giants were helped significantly by successive half-century partnerships of 51 between McCaskie and all-rounder Kadeem Alleyne (30) and 59 between McCaskie and Kemar Smith (19).
There was also a telling ninth wicket stand of 46 off only four overs between Bishop and Harding.
Harding dished out some of the medicine he received when bowling by blasting 36 off 19 deliveries with sixe four and Bishop scored 23 not out off 13 balls including three boundaries.
Six of the first seven batsmen were leg before wicket.
Matthew Jones, the Gladiola captain and left-arm spinner, who skippered the Barbados ‘A’ side on the recent tour to Bermuda for a Twenty20 Festival, took four for 24 off 10 overs.
Cumberbatch picked up two for 57 off seven overs and off-spinner Holder, two for 61 off 10 overs.
At Lucas Street: Both teams should be disappointed with their batting to some extent.
After losing the toss, Trail Blazers were bowled out for 245 in 48.5 overs.
Demetrius Richards, the Wildey wicketkeeper/batsman, who has been one of the leading batsmen in the on-going BCA Super Cup, hit the top-score of 62 off 96 balls including five fours and one six at No. 3.
Chad Williams, better known for his left-arm spin bowling but who is no slouch with the bat as a right-hander, made 48 off 40 balls with four fours and three sixes at No. 9.
Williams and off-spinner Tariq O’Neale (16 not out) added 57 off 7.2 overs for the last wicket – the highest stand of the innings.
Opener Leniko Boucher made 31 off 26 balls as he counted three fours and two sixes.
Zidane Clarke, the lively Carlton and Barbados ‘A’ team pacer and grandson of the former Barbados, Essex County and West Indies fast bowling all-rounder Keith Boyce and son of former Barbados player Shirley Clarke, took four for 53 off 10 overs.
Medium-pacer Jayden Roberts, a Barbados Under-19 player, picked up two for 22 off five overs.
The Titans were dismissed for 187 in 42.3 overs after being 71 for five by the 20th over.
Skipper Drakes, the Wanderers player, who batted at No. 3, scored 92 off 107 balls with seven fours and two sixes.
He was seventh out with the score 165, caught behind square from a sweep off off-spinner Romario Greaves.
Drakes and off-spinner Dante Niles (18) featured in the most productive partnership of 59 for the sixth wicket.
Camarie Boyce scored a fighting 21.
Captain and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican was the leading wicket-taker with three for 39 off 9.3 overs.
Pacer Stefom King took two for 16 off five overs and Greaves, two for 31 off eight overs.
