Barbados Women retain title as Matthews scores 64, grabs 6-28 including hat-trick

Basseterre, St Kitts, May 15 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Captain Hayley Matthews struck a half-century and took six wickets including a hat-trick as Barbados defeated Windward Islands by 73 runs to record a fourth win in as many matches and retain their title with one round remaining in the 2023 Cricket West Indies (CWI) CG Insurance Women’s Super50 Cup at St. Paul’s Sports Complex today.

Matthews, who is also the West Indies Women’s captain, top-scored with 64 off 74 balls including five fours and one six in a total of 228 for six off 50 overs.

She added 89 in 16.4 overs for the second wicket with Kyshona Knight, who made 55 off 82 balls including six boundaries following a stand of 52 in 10.5 overs with Kyshona’s twin sister Kycia Knight (23).

Aaliyah Alleyne made 47 off 54 deliveries with five fours at No. 4.

Zaida James took two for 38 off 10 overs.

Off-spinner Matthews then grabbed six for 28 off ten overs as Windward Islands were bowled out for 155 in 32.2 overs.

The hat-trick was achieved in the ninth over of the innings, starting with the second ball when left-hander James (9) was well caught low in the covers by Alisa Scantlebury. Namiah Marcellin and Kimone Homer were both bowled, defending, as the score slipped from 46 for one to 46 for four.

Matthews was denied a beaver-trick when left-hander Qiana Joseph was dropped at second slip by Shakera Selman.

West Indies Women’s player Afy Fletcher hit the top-score of 43 off 36 balls including five fours and one six at No. 3 before she was fifth out, leg before wicket by Matthews with the score 85 in the 15th over.

Pacer Shamilia Connell took two for 18 off 3.2 overs and leg-pinner Keila Elliott, two for 38 off ten overs.

The win lifted Barbados to an unsurpassable 16 points – six more than second-placed Trinidad & Tobago.

Barbados will oppose bottom-of-the-table Leeward Islands at Warner Park on Wednesday.
