BCA NEWS RELEASE #91/23

BARBADOS UNDER 17 SQUAD ARE HISTORIC DOUBLE CROWN CRICKET CHAMPIONS OF THE 2023 CWI RISING STARS REGIONAL TOURNAMENT HELD IN TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

The Barbados Under 17 cricket squad created history for this island when they became double crown cricket champions (50 over and 2-day) of the 2023 CWI Rising Stars Regional 50 over competitions that were held in Trinidad & Tobago from August 10 to September 1, 2023.   Steven Leslie (BCA Manager, Marketing and Communications), Elvis Howard (Chairman of Selectors) and a jubilant group of excited family members welcomed back the squad at the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) earlier today.

An elated Head coach, Dexter Toppin said, ‘This group of young men fought hard and played sensible cricket throughout the competitions. They bowled really well as a squad and to achieve the double is a tremendous achievement for the squad.’

He further added ‘Discipline was very good both on and off the field and these young men will be great ambassadors for Barbados in the future.’ Leg spinner Zishan Motara (who replaced Joshua Dorne following his call up to the West Indies Under 19 squad) finished as the 2nd leading wicket-taker in the 2-day competition.

Head Coach Toppin felt that his inclusion to the entire bowling group was just one example of the excellence shown by members of the squad throughout the overseas assignment. ‘The lads showed good cricketing skills on the field of play, understood how to adapt and gain points as the 2-day tournament went on. We went into the final match of the 2-day competition knowing what was required and these lads came out trumps. The BCA and Barbados must be truly proud of this group who created history.’
