Brooks, Hope, Leacock star as Barbados beat Jamaica by 47 runs, CWI CG United Super50 Cup

St. Augustine, Trinidad, October 20 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Half-centuries by Shamarh Brooks and captain Shai Hope, along with a career-best four-wicket haul from leg-spinner Javed Leacock, spurred Barbados Pride to a 47-run win against defending champions Jamaica Scorpions in their first match of the 2023 Cricket West Indies (CWI) CG United Super50 Cup here today.

Brooks hit the top-score of 69 off 89 balls with three fours and one six and fellow international player Hope, the West Indies ODI skipper, made 65 off 76 deliveries including four fours and one six in a total of 258 for six off 50 overs after Barbados lost the toss at the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Ground.

The wily Leacock, 26, in his sixth List A match, then snatched four for 43 off eight overs, which earned him the Player-of-the-Match award after he was introduced as the last of eight bowlers.

Jamaica suffered a middle order collapse and were bowled out for 211 in 44.3 overs. It was their second defeat in as many matches in the eight-team competition.

Veteran opener and wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton made an attacking 94 off 112 balls with six fours and six sixes before he was eighth out with the score 179 in the 41st over, holing out to long-on in substitute Kemar Smith, off Leacock.

Boasting of nine players with international experience in either white-ball or red-ball cricket, Barbados’ total was built on half-century partnerships for the second and third wickets following the dismissal of left-hander Kyle Mayers for one with the score four in the second over of the match. He was caught by Walton off debutant pacer Shalome Parnell.

Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Brooks then added 88 in 20.4 overs before Brathwaite, hitting across, was leg before wicket by left-arm spinner Fabian Allen for 45 off 78 balls including two boundaries.

Brooks and Hope put on 88 off 16.5 overs before Parnell removed Brooks.

The dismissal of Hope, caught by Walton running forward on the on-side off fast bowler Nicholson Gordon as he mis-timed a swing, led to a mini collapse with three wickets falling for five runs off 12 balls.

Left-hander Raymon Reifer was bowled by medium-pacer Rovman Powell, the Jamaica captain, for one and Roston Chase fell to Gordon for 10.

But the strength and depth of the Barbados batting was underlined by pacers Dominic Drakes and Akeem Jordan, who blasted 51 unbroken off 23 balls to beef up the total.

Left-hander Drakes, whose father Vasbert Drakes is the Barbados head coach and a former Barbados and West Indies fast bowling all-rounder, raced to 40 not out off only 18 balls with two fours and three sixes, while Jordan was unbeaten on 10 off six balls.

Parnell took two for 33 off five overs and Gordon, two for 41 off seven overs.

Jamaica, with eight players of international experience, also lost an early wicket when new West Indies Test cap, left-hander Kirk McKenzie, was caught, low at mid-off by Leacock off Drakes for three with the score on 10 in the fourth over.

Walton and West Indies Test vice-captain Jermaine Blackwood then added 79 off 13.4 overs before a slump set in as six wickets tumbled for 36 runs in 15 overs.

Blackwood clipped off-spinner Chase into the hands of midwicket in Brathwaite after scoring 30 off 49 balls with four boundaries, and four overs later, Andre McCarthy (nine) holed out to long-on off the same bowler as the ball fell neatly into Drakes’ hands.

Nkrumah was run out for nine after poor communication with Walton off the first ball of the 29th over, and off the very next ball, Leacock lured Powell into a drive as he edged to slip in Jordan.

And off the last ball of the over, Parnell was leg before wicket without scoring as he played across.

The Leacock-Jordan combination was in the picture again when Fabian Allen (two) also edged to slip, leaving the score 125 for seven in the 33rd over.

Walton and Jeavor Royal raised hopes of a fight-back with a few attacking strokes. They added 52 off 8.1 overs before the admirable Leacock prised out Walton.

Debutant fast bowler Jair McAllister, who had earlier come on as second change, was brought back and bowled Sheldon Cottrell for eight before Drakes completed a solid all-round performance by bowling Royal for 44 off 34 balls including four sixes and one four.

Drakes picked up two for 14 off 3.3 overs and Chase, two for 37 off eight overs.
