Clarke (5-25), King (4-13) set up Barbados win against Guyana – CWI Under-17, Round 1

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, August 12 – (www.barbadoscricket.org – Off-spinner Preston Clarke snatched five wickets and pacer Kyron King picked up four to set up a win by four wickets for Barbados against Guyana in their first round match in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Boys’ Under-17 50-over Tournament at Gilbert Park today.

After winning the toss, Barbados put Guyana under early pressure when King had Vickash Wilkinson leg before wicket without scoring in the second over and then caught and bowled Rampersaud Ramnauth for one in the sixth to leave the score 15 for two.

There was a recovery with opener and wicketkeeper Kevin Kisten and Nicholas Shiopersad putting on 33 in 11.3 overs for the third wicket.

But once Clarke had Kisten caught by wicketkeeper Reviera Cottle for the top-score of 23 off 54 balls including two sixes, there was a collapse.

The last eight wickets crashed for 54 runs in 17.5 overs as Guyana were bowled out for 102 off 35.2 overs.

Shiopersad was also a victim of Clarke, bowled for 19 to make the score 84 for six in the 30th over.

Clarke, a Queen’s College student, grabbed five for 25 off 10 overs including two maidens, while King, a student at Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, was a model of excellent economy in taking four for 13 off 7.2 overs.

Barbados overcame a middle order collapse during which four wickets fell for 12 runs in 9.1 overs to triumph with as many as 18 overs remaining.

Foundation schoolboy Akeem McCollin led the way with an unbeaten 35 off 47 balls including three fours and two sixes at No. 6.

Captain and opener Zion Brathwaite made 22 off 32 deliveries with three boundaries.

They were the only double-figure contributors.

Gulcharran Chulai took two for 11 and Salim Khan, two for 19 – both off eight overs.

Barbados’ next match is against Windward Islands, again at Gilbert Park on Monday.
