McCaskie slams maiden List A century in Barbados’ 48 run-win against CCC – CWI CG United Super50 Cup

St. Augustine, Trinidad, October 31 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Talented opener Zachary McCaskie slammed a maiden List A century in his first match of the 2023 Cricket West Indies (CWI) CG United Super50 Cup Championship to steal the show in a Barbados Pride win by 48 runs over Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) here today.

Playing in his 13th match at this level, the 26-year-old McCaskie made 131 off 116 balls including 13 fours and four sixes as Barbados amassed 314 for seven off 50 overs after winning the toss at the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Ground, venue for four of their now five matches.

Drafted into the side for the rested West Indies all-format player Kyle Mayers, who was the first Barbados batsman to score a ton in the current competition, Player Of The Match McCaskie added 108 in 22.3 overs for the first wicket with West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who made 32 off 67 balls.

He then put on 116 off 17.3 overs with international player Shamarh Brooks, who scored 65 off 67 balls with four fours and two sixes.

It was Brooks’ second half-century of the tournament.

There were brisk knocks of 33 off 19 balls with two fours and two sixes from captain Shai Hope, who is also the West Indies ODI skipper, and all-rounder Roshon Primus, who scored 22 off 17 deliveries including two sixes.

McCaskie, who plays for Wildey, the BCA Elite division three-day title-holders and current Championship leaders at mid-season, exhibited an array of fine strokes.

The St. Philip resident, schooled at Foundation, St. Michael and Barbados Community College, reached his century off 94 balls with eight fours and four sixes.

Rain soon stopped play with Barbados well placed for an onslaught at 184 for one off 36 overs. At that stage, McCaskie was on 108 and Brooks, 46.

CCC, including six Barbadians – captain Shane Dowrich, fellow batsmen Kadeem Alleyne and Demario Richards, off-spinning all-rounder Romario Greaves and fast bowlers Chemar Holder and Jediah Blades – were bowled out for 266 in 45.2 overs.

The last six wickets crashed for 48 runs in 6.5 overs.

Dowrich, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Monday – he has been in the wilderness of international cricket for almost three years after playing 35 Test matches, the vast majority as first choice wicketkeeper – sustained his impressive form in the tournament with the top-score of 86 off 84 balls, counting five fours and three sixes.

He put on 84 in 17.4 overs for the fourth wicket with left-hander Richards, who scored 41 off 62 balls with one four and two sixes after CCC were tottering on 39 for three by the end of the ninth over.

Dowrich and gifted West Indies Under-19 team batsman, Jamaican Jordan Johnson, then raised hopes of mounting a serious victory challenge by adding 95 off only 11.5 overs.

But a run out of Dowrich through a combination of fleet-footed rookie Kemar Smith and wicketkeeper Hope, led to the sensational slump.

Left-hander Johnson made 50 off 45 balls with two fours and two sixes.

Off-spinner Roston Chase took three for 56 off 10 overs, left-arm seamer Dominic Drakes, two for 31 off nine overs and medium-pacer Roshon Primus, two for 38 off 6.2 overs.
