Barbadians Sealy and Dorne in West Indies Under-19 squad to tour Sri Lanka

Bridgetown, Barbados, August 17 – (www.barbadoscricket.org) – Allrounder Nathan Sealy and his Christ Church Foundation schoolmate, batsman Joshua Dorne, are the only Barbadians in the West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under-19 squad of 15 for a tour of Sri Lanka in August and September.

Sealy, a left-arm spinner and right-hand batsman, will captain the team in two red-ball four-day “Test” matches, while top order batsman Stephan Pascal of Windward Islands is captain for three 50-over matches.

In the recent CWI Under-19 50-over and three-day tournaments in St. Vincent, both Sealy and Dorne performed outstandingly.

Sealy, the 18-year-old Barbados Under-19 team captain, grabbed the most wickets all told in the three-day Championship – 32 including four five-wicket and two 10-wicket hauls, at a remarkable average of 9.15. He scored 136 runs (Ave: 19.42).

In the one-day competition, he took eight wickets (Ave: 10.25) at a very miserly economy rate of 1.75 and scored 83 runs (Ave: 16.60).

The 16-year-old Dorne, blessed with batting elegance, amassed the most runs for Barbados in both formats. He made 240 (Ave: 34.20) including two half-centuries in the three-day and 190 (Ave: 38.00), also with two fifties in the one-day.

He was the only Barbados batsman to score over 100 runs and record a half-century in the 50-over.

Dorne is also a handy off-spinner.

The squad includes three players who played in the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup in 2022, which was hosted in the West Indies. They are: fast bowler Isai Thorne, allrounder Nathan Edward and left-handed batter Jordan Johnson.

The matches will be played against the Sri Lanka Under-19 team at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium.

Rohan Nurse, CWI’s Talent Pathway Manager is the Head Coach, while fellow Barbadian Rohan Clarke is one of two assistant coaches.

The tour runs from August 25 to September 15.

“This is a very important tour to Sri Lanka for the development of this group of young cricketers. We have some excellent players in the squad who did very well in the recent West Indies Rising Stars Under 19s Championships in St. Vincent, and we believe they will continue to grow and develop on this upcoming tour,” said Robert Haynes, Lead Selector for the Rising Stars Men’s Under-19s.

Haynes added: “This is an integral part of the preparations for next year’s ICC Men’s U-19 Cricket World Cup which will also be played in Sri Lanka. The players will get a first-hand look at the conditions and become acclimatized. We are also very happy that we will have the chance to play two four-day matches. We see the red ball format as very important and vital to the development of our young players. We have not played a Youth Test in a long while and so this is a welcome return to the tour itinerary.”

The next ICC Men’s U-19 Cricket World Cup will be played in Sri Lanka in January and February 2024.
